Coming to London – Conference 2010

As a bustling centre of trade and commerce, London has always been a popular destination for the cultural diaspora.

Through archives we can trace that London has attracted, and offered refuge to, millions of people from round the world.

AfL’s annual conference, Coming to London will explore how and why individuals and groups ended up in London, and how they changed it. From internal migration, through to the activities of the West African Students Union, the diversity of subjects covered is shaping up to offer a fascinating day of discovery.

We are delighted to be able to confirm the conference speakers (click names for speaker profiles):

  • Keynote address: Londoners by Choice,
    Dr Stephen Inwood (author of A History of London, Macmillan, 1998)
  • West African Students in London 1925-1950: A photographic history,
    Dr Hakim Adi (Emeritus Reader at Middlesex University and Honorary Research Associate at University College, London)
  • Sources for migrants into London at the Society of Genealogists,
    Else Churchill (Society of Genealogists)
  • Viewing the past for the present: London Chinese groups at the RGS-IBG archive,
    Vandana Patel (Project Coordinator, Royal Geographical Society)
  • Cogwheels of the Empire – Uncovering hidden histories and challenging stereotypes,

  • ‘Fallen women’ and Salvation Army Rescue Homes in late nineteenth century London,

Coming to London will take place on 16 October 2010 at London Metropolitan Archives.

Advanced discounted booking will be available exclusively to members from mid-June until the end of July.

AfL is also pleased to offer six student places at the special rate of £10 (full fees £30-£45).

The successful applicants will join AfL in recording the conference by producing a paper on selected presentations and resulting discussions. You are also encouraged to participate in the activities behind the scenes to organise the conference.

To apply for one of the six places please complete the application form and return it with a personal statement of your interest and suitability (no more than one side of A4) to AfL before 31 July 2010.
